Masjid al-Fadikh
Overview
Masjid al-Fadikh, also called Masjid al-Shams (Mosque of the Sun), is located in the southeastern part of Madinah near the area of Quba. It is a small, historically rich mosque that connects to events surrounding the early Islamic community and the prohibition of alcohol. The mosque offers a quiet, reflective atmosphere away from the busier pilgrimage sites.
Historical significance
This mosque is named after the drink 'fadikh,' a type of date wine that the companions were consuming when the Quranic verse prohibiting alcohol was revealed. Upon hearing the revelation, they immediately poured out their drinks at this location, demonstrating the extraordinary obedience of the early Muslim community to divine commands. It is also called Masjid al-Shams because the Prophet ﷺ is reported to have prayed here at sunrise.
Did you know?
When the prohibition of alcohol was announced, the streets of Madinah reportedly flowed with discarded wine and date drinks, as every household immediately emptied their stores without a moment of hesitation.
