مسجد المستراح

Masjid al-Mustarah

Overview

Masjid al-Mustarah, the Mosque of Rest, is situated on the return route from the battlefield of Uhud back toward the city center. It is a small mosque in a residential neighborhood north of Masjid Nabawi. The mosque's name evokes the image of weary warriors pausing to recover after an intense battle.

Historical significance

After the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ and his companions stopped at this location to rest on their way back to the city. The battle had been physically and emotionally taxing, with seventy companions martyred including the Prophet's uncle Hamza. This site represents a moment of recovery and resilience, as the Prophet ﷺ regrouped his companions and maintained their morale despite the difficult outcome.

Did you know?

Despite the heavy losses at Uhud, the very next day the Prophet ﷺ called upon his wounded companions to march out again to Hamra al-Asad, demonstrating strength and deterring the Quraysh from any thought of returning to attack Madinah.
