Masjid ar-Rayah
Overview
Masjid al-Rayah, the Mosque of the Banner, is perched on the small hill known as Mount Dhubab in the area west of the central Haram zone. It is a compact mosque with historical military significance and offers a slightly elevated view of the surrounding Madinah streets. The mosque's location on a hilltop is itself part of its story.
Historical significance
This is believed to be the location where the Prophet ﷺ planted his battle standard (rayah) during the Battle of the Trench. The elevated position of Mount Dhubab provided a strategic vantage point from which the Prophet ﷺ could observe the movements of the confederate forces and coordinate the defense of the trench. The banner served as a rallying point for the Muslim defenders during the siege.
Did you know?
The Prophet's battle banner was typically a black cloth known as 'al-Uqab' (the Eagle), while his white flag was called 'al-Liwaa.' Both were carried into battle by designated standard-bearers.
