Mount Thawr

جبل ثور

Jabal Thawr

Overview

Mount Thawr of Madinah (not to be confused with the more famous Mount Thawr near Makkah) is located north of the city and serves as one of the sacred boundary markers of Madinah's Haram. It is a less-visited site that appeals to those seeking a comprehensive understanding of Madinah's sacred geography. The mountain is in a more remote, undeveloped area on the outskirts of the city.

Historical significance

The Prophet ﷺ declared Madinah a sacred sanctuary (haram) between its two lava fields (the eastern and western harrahs) and between Mount Ayr in the south and Mount Thawr in the north. This prophetic designation means that hunting, cutting trees, and other actions are restricted within these boundaries, similar to the sanctity of Makkah. The hadith establishing these boundaries is recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Did you know?

Some scholars spent centuries searching for 'Mount Thawr' in Madinah, as it is a small, little-known peak. It was eventually identified as a reddish hill near Mount Uhud, confirming the prophetic hadith about Madinah's sacred boundaries.
